Why this is useful
A Japan Rail Pass only saves money if the individual tickets you would otherwise buy cost more than the pass. This compares the two using fares you look up yourself.
How it is calculated
Savings = (sum of individual fares ร travellers) โ (pass price ร travellers). A positive result means the pass is cheaper.
Worked example
Example only: if your five journeys add up to 60,000 yen per person and the pass you are considering costs 50,000 yen, the pass saves about 10,000 yen each. Look up real current prices before deciding.
Common mistakes
- Using old pass prices โ the official price has changed in recent years.
- Counting trains the pass does not cover, such as some Nozomi and Mizuho services or private lines.
- Ignoring the pass's consecutive-day validity when trips are spread out.
Questions
Why does the calculator start at zero?
Pass prices and fares change, so we don't put figures in for you. Enter the current official pass price and your fares from an official route planner.
Is a regional pass better?
Sometimes. If your travel stays within one region, a regional JR pass may cost less. Run the same comparison with its price.
