Why this is useful
If you are saving for a reward flight, knowing how many months it will take helps you decide whether to keep earning, transfer points or simply pay cash.
How it is calculated
Monthly points = card spend ร your earn rate + other monthly points. Months to goal = (goal โ current balance) รท monthly points.
Worked example
Example only: spending 2,000 a month at an earn rate of 1 point per dollar plus 500 other points gives 2,500 points a month; a 40,000-point gap takes 16 months.
Common mistakes
- Assuming an earn rate โ use the one in your own card's terms, including any caps.
- Forgetting that reward seat availability and points prices can change.
- Not counting annual card fees against the points earned.
Questions
Why don't you fill in an earn rate?
Earn rates differ by card and change over time, so a built-in figure could mislead you. Enter the rate from your card provider.
