Why this is useful
Group trips often end with one person having paid for most things. Splitting costs fairly at the end avoids awkward conversations.
How it is calculated
Fair share = total spent รท number of people. Each person's balance = what they paid โ fair share; positive means they are owed, negative means they owe.
Worked example
Example only: four friends spend 1,200 in total, so the fair share is 300 each. Someone who paid 500 is owed 200; someone who paid 100 owes 200.
Common mistakes
- Forgetting small shared costs like fuel, tolls and groceries.
- Splitting evenly when some people opted out of an activity โ handle those separately.
- Mixing currencies without converting them first.
Questions
What if we paid in different currencies?
Convert everything into one currency first with the currency conversion calculator, then enter the totals.
Can I split unevenly?
This tool splits evenly. For costs only some people shared, settle those separately.
